Keeping your website up to date and secure

Websites get hacked every day.  Whether you are using the basic html code or the most recent CMS, you are vulnerable to hackers.

Why do hackers want to get into your site?  The two reasons I know of are 1. to redirect your domain name to a domain they control (probably full of nasty crap that will infect the users computer), and 2. to access your email and use your email server to send out loads of spam.

How do you keep them from taking over your domain?

  • You stay one step ahead of them, or as close as you possibly can.
  • Keep  your website updated.  Making sure everything you use is updated will eliminate a lot of the threats.  Hackers can easily prey on those that don’t update sites regularly.

Are you not sure if your site is up to date?  If you use a CMS like WordPress or Joomla, it will tell you when something needs an update.  If you aren’t sure, you can always ask your webmaster.

If you don’t have a webmaster, you can contact me and I’ll tell you what to check for.

I think I should add here…when you secure a CMS site, such as WordPress, make sure you write down exactly what you did. For instance: If you create a new login url to secure the site, write it down!! Realizing you forgot where you login is really not a great feeling (this is from experience, unfortunately). So, make notes and keep them somewhere safe but accessable!!
